Road to Sand
Street, house, lawn, sand, in that order.
One loop runs through Lanikai. It leaves Kailua, follows the beach, turns at the far end and comes back. Along the ocean side, houses tend to sit near the sand and near one another, with relatively little ground between road, residence and shoreline. That closeness is part of the character of the neighborhood.

A Different Proportion
There is enough land for a substantial residence and still a long piece of ground in front of it. The beach remains directly ahead, but the house sits well back from the sand. Parcels running all the way from Mōkūlua Drive to the beach seldom come to market.
The lawn begins one step down from the ocean terrace and continues at essentially the same grade toward the shoreline, open through the middle with palms and planting along its edges.
The pool sits within the courtyard on the opposite side of the residence, leaving the ocean lawn clear. Two levels of deep covered lānai stretch across the ocean side beneath a broad roof, with enough ground in front for the residence to be seen as a whole.
From the house, the lawn gives the ocean a foreground. From the beach, it gives the house room.
At the shoreline, naupaka gives way to the sand. The Mokulua Islands sit offshore, beyond the reef-protected water in front.
A board or kayak can be carried across the lawn and sand and put in. Turn back toward the house and the parcel reads in the opposite direction: lawn, residence and the road beyond.
